Yet another home in one of New York City’s suburb-like neighborhoods is getting an expansion. Last Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved changes to the home at 240-02 42nd Avenue. That’s in the Douglaston Hill Historic District in Queens.
Most of the decisions the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has to make involve structures in somewhat to very densely populated areas. However, the city, with its five boroughs, is quite large and diverse. Sometimes, the commission has to make decisions about more suburban areas. Such was the case last Tuesday when, for the second time in two weeks, the commission has approved the expansion of a single-family home in the Douglaston Historic District in Queens.
The expansion of a single-family home isn’t always worth noting, but when the home sits in a historic district, it’s often worth taking a look at. Such is the case of 233-20 Bay Street in Queens’s Douglaston Historic District, which was on the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s agenda at its public hearing on Tuesday.
Last week brought Queens applications for three more two-family building projects, further steadying the stream of small scale housing development in the relatively suburban outer borough. Small projects like these haven’t been a popular form of new housing since the mid-2000’s, but they are penciling out for local developers post recession.
