It’s been over five years since groundbreaking occurred for the Hudson Yards mega-development. Today, phase one appears all but complete, and is increasingly hard to miss on the overall Manhattan skyline. Stretching over 26 acres and costing $25 billion, the full site will become the largest planned development in the country’s history.
Excavation at 50 Hudson Yards is nearing completion, and thanks to an aerial by Archartdescon, we can see that foundation work has also now commenced. Construction is advancing with incredible speed, and most of the site has been cleared since YIMBY’s last report in November. The pace isn’t too surprising when one considers the several excavators operating simultaneously. Related Companies is responsible for the Hudson Yards development.
Construction of Hudson Yards phase one is wrapping up, and its impact on the city’s skyline is already very substantial. The tallest of the bunch, 30 Hudson Yards, is just a couple dozen feet from its parapet. More significantly, the protruding observation deck is also nearly complete. A temporary steel tent situated on West 31st Street and 10th Avenue will imminently encompass a two-week free exhibition dubbed “Prelude To The Shed,” a preview for the kinds of programs that will soon be performed and showcased at The Shed. Designed by Kunle Adeyemi, with collaboration by artists including Tino Sehgal, William Forsythe, Reggie ‘Regg Roc’ Gray, ABRA, Arca, and Asad Raza, the space emphasizes visual dialogue and an integration of multiple practices within the arts.
A new milestone has been reached for New York’s largest new development. The highest public outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere has begun to take shape near the peak of 30 Hudson Yards. Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group have announced that construction has started for the outdoor terrace, which will be just one part of the multi-floor space that includes a 10,000 square foot restaurant, bar, and space for events programmed by the hospitality group rhubarb, who were also responsible for the Sky Garden lounge in London.
