Statue of Liberty Museum’s Expansion On Track for May 2019 Opening

Construction on the new 26,000 square foot Statue of Liberty Museum, located on the western side of Liberty Island, topped off in December 2017. Already ahead of schedule, it is set to open to the public in May 2019. The $70 million project, designed by FXCollaborative and ESI Design and built by Phelps Construction Group, features a steel structural frame, a new elevated concrete foundation, and a green roof. All of this comes as part of the new design that was revealed in October 2016 by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and the United States Department of the Interior.

$335 Million in Financing Secured for Second Phase of La Central Development, South Bronx

The team behind the La Central Development has closed a deal for financing towards the construction of their massive mixed-use project in the Melrose Community of the South Bronx. This is one of the largest mixed-income projects currently under construction in New York City. Once complete, the project will span 1.1 million square feet, with five buildings and 992 units entirely devoted to affordable housing.

FXFOWLE-Designed School Revealed at 1-35 57th Avenue, Hunter’s Point South, Queens

Permits have been filed for a four-story, 612-seat public elementary school at 1-35 57th Avenue, in Queens. The project comes as part of the redevelopment of the formerly-derelict Hunter’s Point South neighborhood, along the East River. The area has been activated over the last decade thanks to several residential towers and the HPS Park, alongside a new ferry terminal, which is just a four blocks away from the proposed school. The Vernon Boulevard Subway Station is also eleven blocks away, serviced by the 7 train. The New York City School Construction Authority will be responsible for the development.

Extraordinary NIMBY Corruption Alleged in Complaint Against Borough of Edgewater, New Jersey

Last month, YIMBY broke the story for a major site to be developed at 115 River Road, in Edgewater, New Jersey. While we initially reported the address at 615 River Road, that was incorrect; however, the developer of 615 River Road has now filed a lawsuit in Federal Court, alleging that a series of “corrupt transactions” led to the Borough’s vote to seize the property by eminent domain back in September, in a secret a bid to transfer the lot to developer Fred Daibes, who is behind 115 River Road.
