Central Park Tower’s Glass Curtain Wall Nears Completion in Midtown

Taking the number-one spot in our annual construction countdown is the 1,550-foot-tall Central Park Tower, aka 217 West 57th Street, the tallest building by roof level in New York City and the entire western hemisphere, as well as the tallest residential building in the world. Work on the glass curtain wall is approaching the parapet of the slender reinforced concrete superstructure, which rises 99 stories above 57th Street, aka Billionaires’ Row. The project is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and developed by Extell, which is expecting a $4 billion sellout on the tower’s 179 residences. A 320,000-square-foot Nordstrom flagship occupies the base of the building.

Construction on Extell’s 50 West 66th Street May Restart Soon on Manhattan’s Upper West Side

Extell’s 50 West 66th Street slots into YIMBY’s countdown list as the 22nd tallest project underway in New York City. Excavation and foundation work for the 775-foot-tall residential skyscraper progressed quickly in 2019, but activity at the site has recently halted. The reasons for the stoppage are unclear, but YIMBY expects that work will start up again in early 2020. Snohetta is the design team behind the tower, which would become the tallest structure on the Upper West Side.

Brooklyn Point Nears Completion in Downtown Brooklyn

Work is nearing completion on Extell’s Brooklyn Point, number 26 on YIMBY’s countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in the city. The 68-story, 720-foot-tall skyscraper, which is also addressed as 138 Willoughby Street, is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and is part of the third and final phase of the City Point complex in Downtown BrooklynSLCE Architects is serving as the architect of record, while Katherine Newman is designing the interior spaces. A total of 458 units, ranging from studio to three-bedroom units, will be created.

Nordstrom’s Manhattan Flagship Store Officially Opens for Business in Central Park Tower

The seven-story Nordstrom flagship at the base of Central Park Tower, aka 217 West 57th Street, is finally open for business. Thursday, October 24 marked the official opening of the massive 320,000-square-foot store, its largest in New York. The main doors are located along West 57th Street underneath the wavy, transparent glass curtain wall. James Carpenter Design Associates is the designer for the store, collaborating with Nordstrom’s inhouse design team to work with architects, CallisonRTKL. Extell is the developer of the 1,550-foot-high Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill-designed supertall. This is the first portion of the property that is finished.
