Santiago Calatrava’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Continues to Take Shape in the Financial District

Work is continuing on Santiago Calatrava‘s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the Financial District. Located by the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street in the elevated Liberty Park, the structure will serve as the new home for the long-established church that was formerly located at 155 Cedar Street until it was destroyed on 9/11. Calatrava’s architectural concept for the church was inspired by Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia and Church of the Holy Savior of Chora. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is developing the project, which sits directly to the south of the original 16-acre World Trade Center complex.

Times Square Theater’s Retail Conversion and Expansion Progresses at 215 West 42nd Street in Times Square, Manhattan

Work is progressing at 215 West 42nd Street, where the historic Times Square Theater is in the process of a retail conversion and expansion. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle and developed by NYC Economic Development Corporation and Stillman Development International, the $100 million project calls for extensive interior renovations and a vertical extension that will double the structure’s height, bringing it to 138 feet tall and six stories above ground, as well as the addition of a cellar level. The property is located in the heart of Times Square between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, and will yield 52,521 square feet with 34,313 square feet designated for commercial space.

Steelwork Continues on The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center in the Financial District

Construction is continuing on the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center in the Financial District. Designed by REX with Davis Brody Bond Architects as the executive architect and developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the 138-foot-tall structure is one of the final components of the 16-acre World Trade Center complex.

450 Eleventh Avenue Continues Ascent in Hudson Yards

Construction is continuing to rise at 450 Eleventh Avenue, a 487-foot-tall, 531-room hotel from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in Hudson Yards. Designed by DSM Design Group and developed by Marx Development Group, the 43-story tower is one of the newest additions to the booming Midtown West neighborhood surrounding Related Companies‘ first phase of Hudson Yards. The project site is located at the corner of West 37th Street, directly across from the Jacob K. Javits Center.

Central Park Tower aka 217 West 57th Street Set for 2021 Completion in Midtown, Manhattan

Taking the top spot in our construction countdown for the third year is the Central Park Tower, the tallest building by roof height in the Western Hemisphere and the tallest residential skyscraper in the world. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and developed by Extell, the 1,550-foot supertall stands nearly complete at 217 West 57th Street on Billionaires’ Row in Midtown. Developers are expecting a $4 billion sellout for its 179 residences, which are being marketed by Corcoran Sunshine.

111 West 57th Street’s Façade Continues to Wrap Up in Midtown

Exterior work is getting closer to completion on 111 West 57th Street, a 1,428-foot-tall residential supertall on Billionaires’ Row and number two on our countdown of the tallest projects under construction in the city. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development, Property Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners, the 60-unit Midtown skyscraper stands as the world’s most slender structure with a height-to-width ratio of 24:1.

270 Park Avenue’s Demolition Passes Halfway Mark in Midtown East

Demolition is progressing rapidly at 270 Park Avenue, the site of JP Morgan Chase‘s new 1,425-foot-tall headquarters in Midtown East and number three on our end-of-year countdown. The firm is demolishing its former 707-foot-tall, 52-story tower to make way for the massive supertall, which will yield 2.5 million square feet of office space. The full-block parcel is located between Park and Madison Avenues and East 47th and 48th Streets.

Hotel Indigo Continues to Rise at 50 Trinity Place in Financial District

Construction is continuing to rise at 50 Trinity Place, a 28-story Hotel Indigo in the Financial District. The 173-room, 77,310-square-foot structure is designed by Peter Poon Architects and developed by FIT Investment Corporation, which purchased the property in 2012 for $15 million. The site is located at the corner of Trinity Place and Rector Street.

Work Continues on ‘The Summit’ Observatory Atop One Vanderbilt in Midtown East

Work is moving along on the observatory in One Vanderbilt, a 1,401-foot-tall commercial supertall in Midtown East and number four on our countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in the city. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by SL Green, the 77-story skyscraper occupies a full-block parcel immediately to the west of Grand Central Terminal. Though the $1.4 billion property has been officially open since its ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid September, the indoor-outdoor observatory dubbed The Summit isn’t due to welcome the public until October 2021.

Marriott SpringHill’s Superstructure Continues to Rise at 223 West 46th Street in Times Square

Construction is nearing the halfway mark on 223 West 46th Street, a 34-story Marriott SpringHill hotel in Times Square. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by McSam Hotel Group, the project will yield 70,000 square feet and 200 guest rooms. The property is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, a short walk from the large stretch of pedestrian plazas and retail stores that line the crossroads of the world.
