The Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Dock 72 Nears Completion

Major progress has been made for Dock 72, a 16-story commercial office building rising in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Incredibly, it is the first ground-up office building to rise in Brooklyn since MetroTech in the 1980’s. The development is a joint venture with Rudin Management and Boston Properties, with WeWork co-developing and handling amenities. WeWork will occupy nearly a third of the building.

Update on 507 West 27th Street’s Rise Beneath the High Line, Chelsea

Yet another new development by Related Companies is nearing completion. Construction is underway at 507 West 27th Street, a snug single-story structure in Chelsea that is literally built under the High Line Park. While it’s not as glitzy or city-altering as what Related is building nearby, the 14-foot tall commercial structure is of interest because it showcases the possibility for small-scale development filling in underutilized plots of land.

While the project would rise across the street from what had long been Brooklyn’s tallest tower at One Hanson Place, its opponents’ attacks have escalated following YIMBY’s report on a poll showing a 3:1 margin of support, with the NIMBY group behind its creation and deletion accusing “foreign bots” of meddling in the outcome. The gradual redevelopment of Harlem’s 125th Street corridor isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Construction is starting to rise above ground level for a 26-story hotel and 25-story residential tower at 233 West 125th Street. The project is best known for its connection with the Victoria Theater, which will be restored and integrated with the Marriott. The Lam Group is the developer.
