Population in New York City reached 8.8 million in 2020, an increase of 629,000 since 2010, according to new data released by The Census Bureau. The 2020 census was the 24th count and the first time that households could respond to the census online, a change many are touting led to more accurate data.
The official Census guesswork for 2017 has now been released, showing a gain of 7,272 individuals across the Five Boroughs, and a drop of over 2,000 people in Brooklyn. While the actual Census in 2010 was decried as leaving hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers missing from the count, it seems that whoever was behind the calculations for 2017 may have been even more incompetent, with changes to the borough-by-borough tallies painting a picture that makes no sense whatsoever.
Last year, we reported that New York City’s population had increased by 52,700 people between 2013 and 2014, hitting 8,491,079, and nearing what the city had previously projected for 2020. Today, the American Community Survey released updated data as of July 1st, 2015, showing another large increase of 55,211, putting the five boroughs’ population at 8,550,405 — just 502 people short of the official 2020 projection.
