AvalonBay Communities has partnered with Atria Senior Living and Welltower to complete a $300 million mixed-use community in New Jersey’s West Windsor Township. The community is taking shape near the Princeton Junction Amtrak train station and will comprise mixed-income, age-restricted, and market-rate housing in addition to retail, a public promenade, and a mix of enclosed and surface-level parking.
This week Governor Andrew M. Cuomo released new reconstruction options for revitalizing Pennsylvania Station in Midtown, as part of the proposed Empire Station Complex. The initiative is a massive undertaking by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Amtrak, and NJ Transit to unify all three concourses into a fresh and modern space with FXCollaborative and WSP handling design. The existing Penn Station served 600,000 passengers daily and the redesign will accommodate the future influx of customers using both the existing Penn Station and the upcoming Penn Station expansion. The state projects ridership to grow to 830,000 daily users in 2038, about 54 percent of whom will be MTA customers using LIRR, Metro-North, and the subway, and 42 percent to be NJ Transit customers, with remaining four percent to be Amtrak customers.
After decades of planning and three years of construction, Manhattan’s Moynihan Train Hall finally opened its doors today to commuters. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the 255,000-square-foot redevelopment of the landmarked James A. Farley Post Office Building shines with a grand new hall for Penn Station’s Amtrak and Long Island Railroad service, replete with a 92-foot-high glass atrium that harkens back to the original terminal. The new space, which was unveiled on Wednesday by Governor Cuomo, will help relieve commuter congestion and improve train scheduling and capacity.
In a master plan created in part by the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC), 12,000 affordable apartments could be built over Sunnyside Yard in Queens. If it comes to fruitrition, it would be the largest recent development of affordable housing, to the tune of an estimated $14.4 billion. The hefty price includes the deck over the rail yard on which the residential buildings will sit, as well as the streetscape and infrastructure for utilities, a new rail station for commuter trains, multiple schools and libraries, commercial space for offices, manufacturing, and retail, and 60 acres of open space and public parks.
TF Cornerstone’s new Hunters Point South Towers are finally getting ready to rise. The developer acquired the site back in 2013, and there have been major alterations to initial plans, including a substantial height increase for the two towers, designed by ODA Architecture.
