Number 16 on YIMBY’s countdown of the tallest projects underway in New York is 98 DeKalb Avenue, a 49-story residential skyscraper in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Designed by SLCE Architects and developed by Rockrose Development, the 610-foot-tall tower will yield 418,092 square feet with 609 residential units and 3,775 square feet of commercial space. PAL Environmental Services is the general contractor for the project, which is alternatively addressed as 180 Ashland Place and is located at the corner of DeKalb Avenue and Ashland Place.

Demolition Nears Completion for 40-Story Office Skyscraper at 415 Madison Avenue in Midtown East, Manhattan

The 17th-tallest building on our year-end countdown is 415 Madison Avenue, a 40-story commercial skyscraper in Midtown East. Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and developed by 415 Madison Avenue LLC, the 605-foot-tall tower will yield 343,100 square feet of office space, a 350-square-foot ground-floor retail pavilion, and a 2,400-square-foot open-air public concourse. The project is being constructed in compliance with the East Midtown sub-district regulations, with air rights purchased from the landmarked St. Bartholomew’s Church along Park Avenue. PAL Environmental Services is the general contractor and Rudin Management is the owner of the property, which is located at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 48th Street.

Below-Grade Work Progresses for The Brook at 589 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn

At number 18 on our year-end countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in the New York area is The Brook, a 51-story residential skyscraper at 589 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle and developed by Witkoff and Apollo Global Management, the 600-foot-tall structure will yield 591 units with 30 percent reserved for affordable housing, as well as 30,000 square feet of retail space and a 12,000-square-foot cellar level. Bonetti Kozerski is the interior designer and Suffolk Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is bound by DeKalb Avenue to the north, Fulton Street to the south, Flatbush Avenue diagonally to the east, and Bond Street to the west.

Third And Final Journal Squared Tower Rises in Jersey City, New Jersey

The 19th-tallest building on our December construction countdown is Journal Squared‘s Tower 3, a 575-foot tall, 60-story residential skyscraper at 595 Pavonia Avenue in the Journal Square section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Designed by HWKN Architecture and Handel Architects and developed by Kushner Real Estate Group and National Real Estate Advisors, the structure is the final component in the three-tower complex that anchors the western edge of the Jersey City skyline. Tower 3 will feature the same architectural design as its two completed siblings and will rise the second highest, adding 600 more rental apartments to the total inventory. AJD Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is located by the three-way intersection of Summit, Pavonia, and Central Avenues.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Opens to the Public in Manhattan’s Financial District

YIMBY recently visited the completed St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which opened its doors on December 5, 2022. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the reinforced concrete structure stands 25 feet above street level atop Liberty Park, across from the site of the original 16-acre World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District. Interior paintings were all done by hand by iconographer Father Loukas of Xenophontos.
