Details Hamper Approval Of New Home At 361 Macon Street, Bed-Stuy

A new four-story home is probably coming to the vacant lot at 361 Macon Street in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, but not quite yet. With some commissioners absent and those present unable to reach a consensus, the Landmarks Preservation Commission took “no action” on the proposed home in their session on Tuesday. Materials, construction, and inspiration for details were among the issues that hampered approval.

Advocates Clash Over Sailors’ Snug Harbor Historic District On Staten Island

On Thursday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held its second public hearing in an effort to clear its decades-long backlog of items proposed for designation. The day’s items were those on Staten Island, and they included the proposed Sailors’ Snug Harbor Historic District. The 80-acre property has been on the calendar for over three decades and while the majority of those who spoke on Thursday supported designation of the district, there wasn’t unanimity.

One of the most controversial developments in Lower Manhattan got a big thumbs up from the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. The LPC approved the Howard Hughes Corporation plan for Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport, which includes demolition of the Link Building. A big point of contention when the plan was presented in August was a proposed rooftop pergola. With that removed, commission approval was a snap. Tuesday’s presentation also revealed some new renderings of the site.

More Appropriate Design For Meals on Wheels Building at Seaview Hospital Site on Staten Island Wins Over Landmarks

Meals on Wheels of Staten Island will be getting a new home, thanks to Tuesday’s approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The beloved organization has outgrown its home in Richmond County and the city found it a site at the former Seaview Hospital tuberculosis treatment campus, which sits in the New York City Farm Colony – Seaview Hospital Historic District. The address is listed as 460 Brielle Avenue. In July, a presentation was made to the commission, but it was found to be too industrial for the setting. The revised design easily won over the commissioners.

IFC Center Expansion to 14-16 Cornelia Street Nears LPC Approval

The IFC Center movie theater on Sixth Avenue (at West 3rd Street) is one step closer to an expansion that would double the number of screens and alleviate crowding on the sidewalk. This would be accomplished by expanding to an empty lot located behind it at 14-16 Cornelia Street. On Tuesday, the proposal went before the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the commissioners could have approved the upper floors, but wanted more work done at street level.

Upper East Side Townhouse at 39 East 67th Street Getting Glassy Rear Redo

A townhouse that dates back to the 19th century will be getting a decidedly modern rear, thanks to Tuesday’s approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The five-story home at 39 East 67th Street, in the East Side Historic District, will be getting an entirely new rear facade, a reconfigured roof, and restorative work on the front facade.

Green-Wood Cemetery Landmark Designation Has Mixed Support

The Landmarks Preservation Commission is trying to clear its backlog of 95 properties that have been sitting on its calendar since before 2010. On Tuesday, it held a public hearing for those items that are in the borough of Brooklyn, that land of Kings. Among them was the 478-acre Green-Wood Cemetery. It has been on the calendar for over a decade and support for designating the entire site as a landmark was limited, though support for designating specific parts of it was greater.

Among those items was the Pepsi-Cola sign. Almost nobody testified against designating it a landmark.

Homeowners Continue To Fight Douglaston Historic District Extension

One of the more controversial items in the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 95-item backlog is the Douglaston Historic District Extension in Queens. The proposal got a public hearing on Thursday – the first since 2008. While advocates are supporting the designation, many homeowners are tired of being left in limbo and are against it.
