131-141 East 47th Street’s Superstructure Climbs Above Midtown East, Manhattan

Construction has reached the halfway point on 131-141 East 47th Street, a 34-story residential skyscraper in Midtown East. Designed by Ismael Leyva Architects and developed by Silverback Development, the 500-foot-tall structure will yield 200 apartments ranging from studios to two-bedroom units as well as 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space with frontage along West 47th Street. Silverback was brought onto the project by Hopson Development Holdings, which purchased the rectangular parcel for $115 million in December 2019 from the original developers, New Empire Real Estate. Structure Tech New York and Cauldwell Wingate are in charge of building the project, which is located between Lexington and Third Avenues.

The reinforced concrete superstructure has ascended steadily since our last update in August, when the building stood just two stories above street level. Recent photos show the tower eclipsing the first setback on the 18th floor, and it can now be clearly seen from Park Avenue.

Façade work has yet to begin, though we expect to see the first panels go up in the coming months. Based on the pace of progress, YIMBY predicts the structure to top out sometime later this spring. It is interesting to note that the building is rising without the use of a conventional construction crane.

The dusk rendering of 131-141 East 47th Street below shows architectural elements nodding to the classic Art Deco style. This is most emphasized in the vertical fins on the final levels and multi-faceted crown, which will be brightly illuminated at night time. There will also be a secondary set of vertical lights at the base of the building, forming a cohesive look with its pinnacle. Few details have been revealed about the interiors, though YIMBY last reported that a sky lounge will be included.

131-141 East 47th Street is estimated to be completed sometime next year.

Design the building on interesting crown, all floors underway and high enough to call skyscraper. So set these photos to update, and the latest events on development: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. My expectations aren’t too high with this one. But, I hope I’m proven wrong.

  3. I sure am glad the city required that 8 foot setback. It would have been a disaster if it had met the streetwall in an appealing and appropriate manner.

  4. I’m usually not a fan of Levya – but this one looks like Cetra Ruddy. That’s a compliment! I feel like this style is trending right now.

  5. Unfortunately it resembles the recently finished Rose Hill condo. While ok on it’s own, I can’t help but compare the two and this one looks like a low-budget version.
