173-175 Chrystie Street Progresses Behind Scaffolding on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Work is progressing behind scaffolding on 173-175 Chrsytie Street, a topped-out ten-story residential building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Designed by ODA Architects and developed by Nexus Building Development Group, Inc., the 25,500-square-foot-structure will yield 13 units ranging from two- to three-bedroom layouts, as well as 1,537 square feet of ground-floor retail space. The structure stands opposite Sara D. Roosevelt Park and immediately to the north of two other current residential buildings from the same design and development team, 167 Chrystie Street and 165 Chrystie Street.

The project has been in the works for some time, with demolition of the two low-rise buildings on the plot completed in early 2015 and renderings released in September of that year. Construction topped out in the summer of 2019, and exterior work has proceeded gradually since then. While it’s difficult to gauge the state of progress through the thick shroud of scaffolding and netting, it appears that all of the floor-to-ceiling glass has been installed on the main eastern elevation.

The main rendering depicts a white façade with floor-to-ceiling windows and two cantilevering rectangular volumes topped with wide balconies on the upper levels. Residential amenities include a roof deck and bicycle and tenant storage. The nearest subways are the J and Z trains at the Bowery station along Delancey Street to the south and the F train at the 2nd Avenue station to the north on Houston Street.

A revised completion date for 173-175 Chrystie Street has yet to be announced, as the on-site construction board still lists winter 2020.
