The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) recently reviewed proposals to install new awnings and signage at Balthazar Restaurant in Soho. Located at 80 Spring Street, the restaurant occupies the ground floor of the building that was originally constructed in 1903. Today, the restaurant is one of the most popular destinations in the neighborhood.

Richard H. Lewis Architect served as architect of record for the project.

Scope of work includes new sloped, retractable awnings that will extend seven feet above the sidewalk and measure 12 feet long. For installation, the project team will need to drill metal screws into the building to support the 90-pound awning.

The commission is expected to issue a certificate of appropriateness for the project given that the proposed signage and the awnings closely resemble existing conditions.

I actually like posts like this, it represents a real sprit of equality – all filings are important, no matter how big or small! To focus on only the extremes would not reflective of the city we live in, nor the nature of the ACE inductries in NYC.

  3. Good project, thanks for the update

  4. No wonder landmarking only benefits the rich. No small neighborhood business would remain affordable if they had to hire an architect and have renderings done just to replace an awning and signage.
