Phillips, a British-based auction house, will soon open a new Manhattan outpost at 432 Park Avenue in Midtown. The gallery and salesroom is slated to debut this June and will comprise over 35,000 square feet.

Designed by studioMDA, the building sits at the base of supertall condo property 432 Park Avenue and resembles a glossy white ice cube with frontage along Park Avenue and East 56th Street. As described by the architect, the cube counters the classical typology of the “auction behind closed doors” and presents a visual invitation to witness a typically private, curtained-off setting.

The building stands six stories above ground with a glass curtain wall from curb to pinnacle. The building’s double-height entry level plunges dramatically into a lower-level atrium, all sheathed in transparent glass. Above the second floor, the glass envelope is frosted and will likely house storage facilities, office space, and administrative areas.

The space will also feature digital media walls, 4K video broadcasting of the auctions, and cutting-edge technology for collectors around the globe to partake in virtual exhibits.

Phillips will open with a 20th century and contemporary art exhibition leading up to premiere auctions on June 23-24.

  1. Just think how many tacky dupes will overpay for art in that gorgeous space.
