Façade work is wrapping up on 1100 Avenue of the Americas, a 15-story office building at the corner of West 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Brookfield Properties, the project involves a complete exterior overhaul as well as extensive renovations to the building’s 386,190-square-foot interiors. AECOM Tishman is the general contractor for the project, which is located across from the northern corner of Bryant Park and to the east of COOKFOX‘s One Bryant Park.

Recent photos show the extremely reflective glass assembly substantially finished with only portions remaining around the partial eastern elevation that abuts the Grace Building, the entire ground floor behind the sidewalk scaffolding, and the sliver of panels where the mechanical hoist is attached to the northern elevation. Installation of the opaque panels is also wrapping up around the mechanical extension above the roof parapet.

The rendering below emphasizes the new skin’s lighter visual appeal, an upgrade over the original darker and heavier looking enclosure. Inside are repetitive rectangular-shaped floor plates each measuring around 25,000 square feet. The external overhaul and inside renovations also call for the addition of a new outdoor roof terrace. This will likely be placed on the southern side to provide occupants views of Bryant Park, the Empire State Building, and the surrounding Midtown skyline, as well as abundant direct daylight exposure in the morning and early afternoon. The rendering also shows the first two floors to have some of the highest ceiling heights and more transparent glass panels.

The complete transformation of 1100 Avenue of the Americas looks like it could wrap up by the end of the year.

  1. This has so far turned out better than I anticipated. The glass is superb!

  2. Sixth Avenue between 42nd and Rockefeller Center would be a fine area to upzone, in exchange for transit improvements.
