LPC Considers Updated Proposals for 39 Chauncey Street in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn

NV Design Architecture recently returned to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) with updated proposals to construct a new four-building townhouse development in Brooklyn. Located at 437-441 Lewis Avenue and 39 Chauncey Street, the property is within the Bedford-Stuyvesant Historic District and requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the commission before construction can begin.

Modifications pertain primarily to the façade, which will now be constructed of a more contextual mix of red brick masonry, bluestone mansard roofs, limestone accents, and dark concrete stairs to match adjacent properties. The entrances to each townhouse will be flanked by steel modesty planters and rubbish enclosures designed to match the window framing at the ground level.

The homes within will contain four full floors of living area including a finished cellar. Above the third story, residents will have access to a private roof deck.

Overall, the new renderings illustrate an inspired departure from the brown brick façade previously presented to the LPC in December 2020.

The renderings were presented to the LPC with members of the Unicorn Properties Group development team on February 9, 2021. The commission has yet to offer an official response to the project.

  5. This does look better but still not great. I dislike the smallish size of the windows. It nearly makes the buildings feel like a penal institution.

    I want to move back home on beautiful Chauncey St. !

  8. Horrible design not at all in line with the historic brownstones, park, and frame house next to it. The block is landmarked for a reason. The facade needs to match the area. This is not even close.
