Construction is nearing completion on 305 West 48th Street, a 303-foot-tall hotel in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. Designed by Gene Kaufman and developed by Bright Management with Rockwell Group as the interior designer, the 27-story building will yield 211 hotel rooms. The site is located at the corner of West 48th Street and Eighth Avenue, a short walk from Times Square and the Theater District.

Recent photos show the state of progress on the tower, which is substantially complete apart from the parapet, that awaits cladding for the water tower and mechanicals. The glass and dark gray walls appear to be done, and work is progressing on the cantilevering balcony near the pinnacle. This is planned to be part of the 27th-floor rooftop bar and lounge, which will provide views looking south over Hell’s Kitchen.

The most prominent development since our last update in August is at the podium, which features a striking brick façade with four-story-high arches. At the time of the last visit, this section consisted only of a steel frame. A masonry assembly exhibits a high level of craftsmanship, with a running bond pattern and lightly varying earth-toned colors, and will serve as the main entrance to the hotel.

The building yields 73,000 square feet with 59,000 square feet allocated toward the hotel rooms. Amenities for guests and visitors include a bar and lounge in the cellar, a ground-level rear garden, and a second-floor terrace.

No formal completion date for 305 West 48th Street has been announced, but it looks like sometime in the first half of 2021 is possible.

This one isn’t bad. The brick wall works so much better with the obligatory setback.
Maybe Kaufman really despises Sam Chang explaining those terrible projects. It’s still no excuse.

  3. At least this one has SOME character. In truth, it’s actually not that bad. But, Gene Kaufman still isn’t quite there yet.

    • Don’t be fooled, Gene will never get “there”. It’s like thinking if you try hard enough you can train your dog to speak.

  4. This “one” has little character and inferior materials..the glass, the walls – nothing redeeming about it. It looks like a place holder, built to last 5 years and then, torn down for a real building.

    • Unfortunately that will not be the case. Some ofthese horrible Gene/poon/McSam abortions that are set back from the street and seem to be specifically designed to offend the human sensabilities of thought and care, may eventually be reclad or reimagined at the base to improve their street presence, but it likely eont happen until theyve been making the street look like crap for thirty years.

  5. Eh. It’ll be fine. It has a roof top bar, which is a good thing.

  6. 21st Century Brutalism. It looks like a prison. But the brick podium is a very nice touch, well executed and context friendly. At least that much.
