Aloft Hotel’s Façade Makes Progress at 132 West 28th Street in Chelsea

Exterior work is progressing on the Aloft Hotel, a 32-story tower at 132 West 28th Street in Chelsea. Designed by Peter Poon Architects and developed by Frank Ng, the 326-foot-tall building will yield 203 guest rooms between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

Recent photographs show the glass curtain wall on the main northern elevation has been nearly completed since our last visit in late August. The façade has reached the final set of floors below the roof parapet, and all that remains to be clad are the upper mechanical section and the gap near the midway portion of the exterior, which will be enclosed in a black surface, most likely ventilation grilles. The last accessible floor is set to open as a rooftop bar with views looking north toward Midtown. Above this will be two water towers subtly hidden behind what appears to be a translucent mesh screen wall as depicted in the main rendering above. The blank eastern and western walls made of concrete and cinder block walls should likely be covered up in some kind of opaque paneling system.

One unexpected observation on site is the reflection of the diffused sunlight against the thin metal panels covering the edges of the floors plates, producing a shimmering effect between the floor-to-ceiling windows on the northern profile.

The guest amenities for the Aloft Hotel include a fitness center, a ground-floor bar and lounge, an outdoor terrace on the second floor, and a business center on the third floor. This property is just one of several in the hotel chain that are being constructed in the city, as another Aloft Hotel is currently going up in the Financial District at 50 Trinity Place. The superstructure is now several floors above street level and will take more time to finish. The closest subways to the Chelsea location are the 1 train at West 28th Street and Seventh Avenue and the R and W trains at Broadway.

A completion date of 132 West 28th Street has not been announced, though YIMBY predicts things can wrap up by the end of this year.

  1. It’s miles better than its closeby neighbor, if you know what I’m referring to. But seriously, I do like the glass design on the Aloft Hotel.
