The Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved proposals to construct a glass-clad rooftop addition at 13 Harrison Street in Manhattan. The property is located within the Tribeca West Historic District and thus required certificate of appropriateness from the voting commissioners.

The four-story building was originally constructed in 1887 and features a charming arched entryway, metal framing at the ground floor and a red brick façade at the second through fourth floors. In its current condition, the structure contains a small retail component on the ground floor with 11,800 square feet of residential area on the levels above. The latter component includes a four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment and a six-bedroom, six-bathroom unit with private rooftop access.

It is most likely the owner of the upper-level condominium has commissioned Bialosky + Partners Architects to design the roof-level expansion.

As revealed by preliminary renderings, the expansion will top out at nearly 13 feet and will largely be enclosed by a glass façade. The enclosure slopes away from the street wall to obscure visibility from the ground floor. A new bulkhead located above the glass volume will be clad in dark gray metal, giving the building a final overall height of about 75 feet.

The proposals also call for modest upgrades to the building’s existing window openings.

The project team has not announced when construction could begin.

  1. This actually goes together pretty well. It’s subtle, but quite nice.

  2. Me need a new appartment

  3. I remember when they built out the property of Puffy’s many years ago. I also recall vividly the restoration on the corner of Hudson and Harrison that later came to be the home of Chanterelle. It was a very lovely area back then. I remember when they did 90 Hudson too.

  4. Boring addition that looks like a suburban fast food restaurant solarium, in my humble opinion.

  5. In search if a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment after 13 yrs house was sold and now I’m looking for a home for us. Divorced on a fixed income SSD
