451 Tenth Avenue’s Superstructure Begins Ascent in Hudson Yards

Construction is rising at 451 Tenth Avenue, a 580-foot-tall mixed-use skyscraper in Hudson Yards and number 28 on our countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by Related Companies, the 44-story project is located between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, directly to the north of Bjarke Ingels‘ The Spiral at 66 Hudson Boulevard.

Recent photos show the progress that has occurred at the site since our last visit in late March, when the property was still in the process of being excavated. Now, the reinforced concrete superstructure stands several floors above street level and has eclipsed the roof level of its low-rise neighbor. As no finalized rendering has been released for the project, the overall shape of the building is unclear at the moment. However, a number of small stepped setbacks on the western elevation suggest a lively design, possibly akin to The Spiral.

At one point 451 Tenth Avenue was conceptualized as a slender metallic supertall, though those plans never came to fruition. At this point, it’s likely the structure will employ a glass curtain wall like its Hudson Yards neighbors.

A completion date for 451 Tenth Avenue has not been officially announced, but sometime in 2022 is conceivable.

  1. Oooooh, I haven’t seen The Spiral in a little while and it appears to be quite far in glass installation. ?
Anyways, with 451 Tenth Avenue, I think it’s quite promising. I see quite a bit of setbacks on this one which could lead to a very interesting design, or a shorter version of The Spiral. It’s very unlikely, but those setbacks have some suttle similarities. ?

    • It seems like The Spiral is going to be so hemmed in that it might be difficult to get the full effect of the spiraling. I don’t know the neighborhood at all, so I don’t know what the neighboring buildings are and how much of the view of The Spiral they will block. BIG’s renderings always showed the building in a splendid isolation that apparently doesn’t exist.

  2. Thomas it’s “subtle” not “suttle”. Nevertheless this building looks promising but so does its neighbor.
