Work Continues on 291 Livingston Street in Downtown Brooklyn

Work is continuing on 291 Livingston Street, a 22-story, 100-room hotel building in Downtown Brooklyn. The 189-foot-tall project is designed by Gene Kaufman Architect and is being developed by Aview Equities and Hello Living, which purchased the plot for $11.1 million. The property is located between Nevins Street to the east and Hanover Place to the west, and is planned to contain a ground-floor beer garden.

Recent photos show 291 Livingston Street still fully shrouded in a thick assembly of black netting, metal scaffolding, and long wooden boards, much the same as it was when we last visited in late July. Due to the density of this assembly, the state of progress on the structure’s façade is unclear. The exterior elevator hoist is still attached to the northern back side of the tower, where we can also see a pair of cantilevering platforms on the top levels. These could be terraces for select hotel rooms.

Renderings depict the building clad in black brick with large windows, and corner terraces with rounded columns. The most intriguing design aspect, however, is the black-and-white dazzle-patterned mural on the western face. The dizzying array of stripes are asymmetrically arranged across the two windowless surfaces above the adjacent corner low-rise structure, as well as the mechanical extension on the very top of the building. It remains to be seen if this striking feature makes it into the actual design.

Based on the inability to accurately track the progress of work on 291 Livingston Street, it’s unclear when the building will finish construction and open to the public. At this point, it’s safe to assume it will be well into 2021.

  1. Rendering..a building on LSD

  2. Oh, please, PLEASE, cut the “dazzle-patterned” mural!

  3. Just horrible.

    Kaufman is criminally negligent.

  4. There’s no doubt about it. This is Gene Kaufman’s worst building ever conceived. Please don’t let this awful mural make the final design. It’s horrendously ugly! ?

    • Mural is cross zebra, just to remind motorist, this not in jugle and they must to obey pedestrian on zebra crossing…

The windowless (mural) wall might indicate they don’t have air rights over the lot next door. Let’s hope someone builds something tall there.

  7. Well it is ugly. But its a 3d rendering. For a booty motel, slash tourist den it could be worse. Quite possible they go for a muted and cheaper siding. The site only cpst them 11 million.

Whoch makes me wonder how long they have been sitting on it. Wonder what eas there before? An ugly under utilized building with expired tenants? That the owner bought in the 60s for 2 million.

Its not meant to be pretty. But 220 dollar entry rooms with 85 percent occupancy perhaps they can make their money back

    • I have been watching this building being built from my apartment window. (I look down on it from a few floors above) Seems like it’s almost done. They are building the enclosures on the roof now. Also, yes, the mural looks terrible in the rendering, but it doesn’t look so bad in person. It’s actually mostly gray. As for the building overall, it is ugly. Like something out of the 1970s. And, it looks to be almost too narrow to be functional.
