This week, Turner Construction hoisted the final steel beam into place on St. John’s Terminal, Google’s 1.3-million-square-foot addition to its Hudson Square campus at 550 Washington Street. Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Oxford Properties Group, the 12-story building spans two full city blocks, with 100,000-square-foot floor plates, a rare scope for commercial buildings in Manhattan.
“As New York City comes back, it’ll be tech that leads the way,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Google has doubled down on their big bet on New York City because they know we have advantages that are unmatched across the country and across the globe. Together, we’re going to build on that strong foundation and that work starts today.”

The multi-phase development involved the expansion and integration of an existing three-story commercial property that once served as a freight terminal. This included the removal of train tracks present at the build site, along with an overpass covering Houston Street at the north side of the building.
Occupants will have access to landscaped terraces, rooftop areas, a lush entry plaza, and an unspecified suite of amenities.

The base of the St. John’s Terminal building is expected to be completed by 2022. To date, the development has directly created more than 500 construction jobs.
“Congratulations to Oxford Properties and Turner Construction on the milestone of topping off of St. John’s Terminal, an achievement that demonstrates Manhattan and the City of New York are open for business,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “Thanks go to the hundreds of construction workers who made it possible, in the middle of the pandemic, and to Google, which is deepening its roots in the city.”
