YIMBY checked in on the progress made on NYU‘s expansion located at 181 Mercer Street in Greenwich VillageDavis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake are the designers of the full-block, 23-story, 750,000-square-foot structure, which sits along Houston Street directly to the east of I. M. Pei’s three-tower University Village complex. 181 Mercer Street is bound by Houston Street to the south, Mercer Street to the east, and Bleecker Street to the north.

It won’t be long before we see the massive superstructure topping out. Meanwhile the curtain wall on the first few levels of the podium have already begun to go in place. The ones we see right now have a mix of flat and angled reflective panels. Renderings show an envelope of clear floor-to-ceiling glass with minor variations among the upper array of floors positioned above the podium.

This new extension of NYU will house students and faculty, as well as yield more office space and dining areas. The top of the podium will make room for an outdoor landscaped terrace for both students and faculty members. Inside will house an indoor six-lane swimming pool, a running track, four basketball courts, squash courts, a wrestling room, multiple fitness rooms, as well classrooms, studios, multiple theater rooms, practice and rehearsal rooms, and a cafe. The performing arts facilities will be composed of a theater and orchestra pit, complete with balcony and mezzanine seating designed to accommodate up to 556 people.

The 6 train at Bleecker Street; the B, D, F, and M trains at the Broadway-Lafayette Street station to the east along Houston Street; and the R and W trains at the Prince Street station in SoHo are all the nearest subways from the development site.

181 Mercer Street is slated to be completed in early 2022.

  3. a dog, truly.
NYU knows no shame we know, but obviously nothing about design either.

  4. A Pre Pandemic Design
Hopefully I am sure that NYU is trying to do it’s best to redesign the interior space to address this especially with the athletic facilities and performance spaces.

  5. They should get rid of the Landmark policy in Greenwich
Village. NYU is building a monster that does not fit in with the surrounding area which has limits on building. Let the Village build. Landmark is now happy for they love the 1920’s and 1930’s look. Well the depression in retail is back . Don’t change anything let’s stare at this depressed look for 100 years . Only Landmark is happy.

  7. NYU is a plague. Ruining the Village while churning out class after class of little woke Marxist robots.
