Gabellini Sheppard Associates Proposes New Retail Storefronts in Rockefeller Plaza

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is now reviewing the latest phase of proposals to update and enliven Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. The proposals specify modifications to ground-floor retail area at 50 Rockefeller Plaza between West 50th and West 51st Streets.

Developer Tishman Speyer has retained Gabellini Sheppard Associates as executive architect, to whom all new illustrations and site plans are attributed. These new renderings do not reveal any major changes to the existing masonry façade, but rather the storefront windows, the granite base at the corner of the building, and ornate bronze trim.

The existing retail component is occupied by Anthropologie’s Manhattan flagship store. The retailer will eventually be replaced by a large restaurant with both indoor seating and outdoor dining space within the plaza. Existing storefront windows will be lowered and made flush with the concrete pavement for an expanded viewing experience for both future customers and pedestrians.

The existing bronze trim around entryways into the building will be replaced in kind where necessary. This includes a new ADA-compliant door at 50 Rock’s east-facing elevation.

The proposals do not specify a timeline for the project, but the LPC is expected to review the proposals on Tuesday, June 9.

  3. This is like playing a game of spot the difference.

    • If I’m reading this correctly, what they’re doing is making the two glass display windows act like automatic garage doors, so they can have open air frontage.
