SHoP Architects’ 9 DeKalb Avenue Makes Quick Vertical Progress in Downtown Brooklyn

Work is several floors above street level and rising at 9 DeKalb Avenue, a 1,066-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, 73-story structure will become the first supertall in Brooklyn and the outer boroughs.

Tectonic captured several photographs of the building’s progress from across Flatbush Avenue and from next to the City Point complex.

Foundation work was a protracted process due to the irregular configuration and narrow footprint of the building. But over the past few months, the shear walls and floor slabs of the reinforced concrete superstructure have begun to climb quite swiftly. Workers were seen placing rebar to form the next set of columns and walls as the recently poured concrete settles among the formwork below. It shouldn’t be long before construction passes the podium and the hexagonal floor plates of the main tower begin to take shape.

The supertall project will yield a total of 425 rental apartments and 150 condominiums with amenities such as an outdoor terrace and a rooftop pool on top of the Dime Savings Bank. The domed atrium of the historic bank with its ornate details will be preserved, and the hall will serve as an entrance to the planned 120,000 square feet of retail space.

The nearest subways to the site are the B, Q, and R trains at the DeKalb Avenue station to the north. Also nearby are the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains to the south at the Nevins Street station and the A, C, and G trains to the west at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets station.

9 DeKalb Avenue is anticipated to be finished around 2022.

  1. I am really happy to see this beauty finally go vertical! Looking forward to seeing its progress. Thanks, Michael!

  2. If Brooklyn was its’ own city it would be the 3rd (?) largest in the entire U.S.
    Go Brooklyn!

  3. Yet another beautiful tower going up by JDS and SHoP Architects! My fav new tower is 111West57, but this is pretty damn cool too!. 🙂

  4. So, Gotham now has three downtowns with their many skyscrapers, not just Manhattan (Brooklyn and Jersey City being the other two). No other grand city has so many super high downtowns. They have just one (if they can afford it). But now Gotham outdones all others once again. Good for you “Metropolis,” good for you

LIC is also getting an instant skyline. The FAA has limited building heights below 1,000 feet but most large city skylines don’t break that height. Brooklyn, by far has the best outside of the now uneven skypricked Manhattan.

  5. I thought there was a lockdown on non essential construction

  6. Despite the idiots in DC who hate this part of the USA & this miserable disease, NYC shall not perish. This project progressing proves it, just as Empire State rising during the depression did.

  7. Oh, & to Dan, you forgot LIC

  8. They should call that the Eye of Sauron building.

Dubai? Shanghai? Hong Kong? Bejing? Welcome to NY …

  10. Yeah, absolutely LIC was missed there, so four core skylines. If you want to extend out just a bit, Newark, New Rochelle, and White Plains all have skylines that are the equal of some states’ largest cities. I once saw one amazing areal photo, I think if I recall, from a bit North of White Plains on an amazingly clear autumn day that had its skyline in the foreground and in the distance Manhattan, LIC, Brooklyn, JC, and Newark all visible. It was epic….
