Curtain wall installation has begun at 611 West 56th Street, aka 823 Eleventh Avenue, a 37-story condominium building in Hell’s Kitchen. Located near the Hudson River at the northwestern corner of West 56th Street and Eleventh Avenue, the 450-foot-tall project is designed by Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and is being developed by Sumaida + Khurana and LENY, with SLCE as the architect of record. Gabellini Sheppard Associates is in charge of interior designs for the 80 units.

Recent photos by Tectonic reveal the look of the bright white limestone façade, which has reached the top of the podium section. All of the windows have now been installed on the reinforced concrete structure.

The structure is capped with a flat roof parapet and features a large blank wall on the northern elevation. The rendering below shows a closeup of its final appearance, which reveals a very subtle basket weave pattern in the cladding of the building’s semi-monolithic crown.

611 West 56th Street possesses a very slender profile on its eastern and western elevations, an impression heightened by its location adjacent to the massive, all-glass 606 West 57th Street, aka The Max. The substantial height, bright exterior, and simple design of Siza’s first New York project will make it stand out among the other structures in the neighborhood.

The property will contain one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, including penthouses and maisonettes with private outdoor terraces. Residents will have prime views of the Hudson River, all of Hell’s Kitchen looking south, and the Midtown skyline to the east.

It appears construction on 611 West 56th Street may be completed sometime early next year.

Wow! That is one slender, sleek slab. Very nice.

  2. Absolutely stunning. No nonsense, no frills, the best of modern architecture. BRAVO.

  3. Are the stairs and elevators in a pocket dimension?

  4. Nope – work stopped. This one is not on the DOB “essential construction” map because not affordable housing.

  5. The external elevator is coming down, you can see right in the units

  6. I want to live in one of these buildings
