Preparations for construction appear to be underway at the site of the River Street Waterfront Master Plan, Bjarke Ingels Group‘s proposed two-skyscraper, 1000-unit complex along the Williamsburg waterfront in Brooklyn. Developed by Two Trees, the project includes the 600-foot-tall 87 River Street and 650-foot-tall 105 River Street, as well as the alteration of the shoreline to create a circular beach, a 2.9-acre park, and two breakwaters directly to the north of the six-acre Domino Park.

Recent photos taken from the edges of the fenced-off site show some bulldozers leveling the land and removing the overgrown weeds and shrubs. The last two photographs were taken in June 2019 before anything was touched.

Of the development’s residences, 25 percent, or exactly 250 units, will be allocated toward affordable housing. The complex will also feature a 47,000-square-foot YMCA community gym with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, as well as 57,000 square feet of office space and 30,000 square feet of retail area. Other features include a tree-covered picnic spot, a nature trail with bird lookout points, a lawn, an outdoor tidal classroom, an amphitheater, a salt marsh, porch swings, a boat launch, kiosks for boat rentals, and locally run eateries on the southern end of the property.

YIMBY last reported in December that approvals from City Hall, the Department of City Planning, and the US Army Corps of Engineers will be needed before construction commences. The two-tower project is estimated to take about five years to complete, but no timeline has been released yet.

  1. The final photo in MY’s series (June 2019) is a work of art!

  2. Very exciting news. This will be an enhancement of the water front for all to benefit.

  3. Like all of BIG’s NYC buildings, there is a total disconnect between the building and its environment/community.

  4. I much prefer the empty lot.
