The massive steel superstructure of NYU‘s newest building is continuing to climb at 181 Mercer Street in Greenwich VillageDavis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake are the designers of the 23-story, 750,000-square-foot structure, which sits along Houston Street directly to the east of I. M. Pei’s three-tower University Village complex.

Photos from around the development show the state of construction. The block-long podium is nearly structurally complete, and most of the activity is now shifting to the assembly of the first levels of the towers. It’s easiest to see the project in its entirety by looking from across Houston Street.

The tallest of the three towers will rise at the corner of Houston Street and Mercer Street. This is where we see the chamfered, indented corner on the southern tip of the podium.

Curtain wall installation has not begun yet, but parts of the northern elevation appear primed for the arrival of the first glass panels.

It is possible for the project to top off before the end of 2020. Interiors won’t likely commence until 2021 and onward.

The towers will be clad in glass and house students and faculty, along with office space and dining areas. An outdoor landscaped terrace for students and faculty members will sit atop the podium. The development includes an indoor six-lane swimming pool, a running track, four basketball courts, squash courts, a wrestling room, multiple fitness rooms, as well classrooms, studios, multiple theater rooms, practice and rehearsal rooms, and a cafe. Performing arts facilities will include a theater and orchestra pit with balcony and mezzanine seating designed to accommodate 556 people.

The closest subways are the 6 train at Bleecker Street; the B, D, F, and M trains at the Broadway-Lafayette Street station to the east along Houston Street; and the R and W trains at the Prince Street station in SoHo.

YIMBY last reported that 181 Mercer Street is expected to be completed in early 2022.

  1. Another win for progress and common sense over reactionary, build-the-wall NIMBYs.

  2. NYU is like an ever-growing parasite in Greenwich Village. This ghastly, disjointed mess of a building is going to be an ugly monument to the most over-rated, over-priced commodity in America: a university education. Even worse, NYU is merely a playground for the spawn of the globalist elites.

  3. I lived in the village for many years. what happend to height ordinances to protect the character of the area?

  4. This is long-needed for NYU. The NIMBYs can moan all the way, but the fact is, NYU has greatly expanding in the last 30+ years with dorms as far north and east as 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue as I last remember, well over a mile from the main campus. With the “superblock” that has long since been there, it makes sense to build on it where such is actually needed.
