Foundation Work Underway at 159 Broadway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Foundation work has begun at 159 Broadway, a 26-story mixed-use residential project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Designed by Stonehill & Taylor Architects and developed by Cornell Realty Management LLC, the 133,340-square-foot project is located across the street from Peter Luger Steakhouse and directly abuts the 145-year-old landmarked Williamsburgh Savings Bank. The structure will eventually top out at 277 feet and become one of the tallest buildings in the neighborhood.

Photos show the property completely excavated and the foundation slab and perimeter walls continuing to be formed. Several portions of the core are visibly outlined with steel rebar. A construction crane has yet to arrive at the site, but it is likely that construction could reach street level by the middle of the year. The first floors of the superstructure could rise within the second half of 2020.

The lower portion of the development will house a hotel with 251 rooms, while the upper floors will contain 21 condominiums, some with long balconies on the southern elevation. These two sections feature different façades, with a light-colored masonry envelope with an orderly grid of square windows giving way to a glass-clad form with irregularly placed terraces. The slim western elevation has a slightly cantilevering wraparound balcony facing the Manhattan skyline and the nearby Williamsburg Bridge.

The closest subway is the elevated Marcy Avenue station serviced by the J, M, and Z trains. The South Williamsburg ferry terminal is a ten-minute walk toward the East River.

129 Broadway’s completion date has been updated to the fall of 2021, as noted on the construction fence signage.
