Brooklyn’s First Supertall Gets Its Construction Crane, at 9 DeKalb Avenue

Work has taken a big step forward at 9 DeKalb Avenue, the outer boroughs’ first supertall skyscraper and number seven on YIMBY’s countdown of the tallest projects underway in New York City. The construction crane has been assembled at the Downtown Brooklyn site and things are gearing up for the start of vertical progress in 2020. The 73-story, 1,066-foot-tall tower is designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, the same duo behind 111 West 57th Street.

Photos show that the base of the crane is positioned close to the 160-year-old, landmarked Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn.

The steel rebar extending from the pilings can be spotted from above, while crews are forming portions of below-grade floor slabs. Aerial views of the plot really reveal the tight, irregular nature of the property, which has posed a challenge for workers since demolition and excavation. Things should speed up once the first several residential floors of 9 DeKalb Avenue begin to surpass the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn, and the elongated hexagonal form of the main superstructure starts to take shape.

The development will contain 425 rental apartments and 150 condominiums. There will be an outdoor terrace and a rooftop pool for residents on the roof of the Dime Savings Bank and an entrance that connects to the preserved historic bank interior, and 120,000 square feet of retail space along Flatbush Avenue. The only part of the parcel that is left untouched by the development is the two-story structure on the southeastern corner where Junior’s Restaurant and Bakery is located.

Access to the B, Q, and R trains is located across the street to the north at the DeKalb Avenue station. The Nevins Street station, with access to the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains, is also nearby. Fulton Street is flanked by a number of shops, while City Point Brooklyn is across Fleet Street with over three dozen food vendors including a Trader Joe’s, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and a Target.

  3. Wonderful that not only will the original bank building be preserved but will also be restored inside and out. In this connection, SHoP Architect’s masterstroke has been to plan for the development’s leisure pool to be on the bank roof around the dome. No doubt WSP has the evaluation of the bank roof’s load-bearing capacity well in hand.

  4. They finally gets a tower crane, God bless them for then floors up in this first ever supertall tower in the Island(Long Island).
    325 meters or 1,066 feet, 73 actual floors will be built.
    Makes Brooklyn Point at mere 720′ looks small, and makes this area as true Skyscraper Cluster, like those in Manhattan.

  5. Rendering picture is outdated, not shown Brooklyn Point, the tallest building right now in Brooklyn, and didn’t show the 600 feet Office Building what’s is already topout. Also Citypoint shopping center is already completed. This picture from the scene 3 years ago. A lot of happening in Downtown Brooklyn for this period.

    • Yes, lets have more project buildings to fill the space. We did that in the 60s and 70s. See where that one went. Wealth attracts wealth, civility and cleanliness attract civility and cleanliness. Off with the misguided Socialist “protest psychosis”. Long live the skyscraper, comfort and wealth. Down with poverty and squalor.

  7. It is good to see that work is finally being done at a quicker place at this site. For months, this site has been not “talked about” and basically showed no progress…. this gives us a glimpse of what’s about to come! It’s vertical ascension is soon to come..

    it will surely look ugly, out of place, unseemly, inappropriate and incongruous
    as it looms above & behind the stately Dime Savings Bank -like some malevolent dagger.
    The only redeeming feature is the fact of Juniors remaining intact.

  9. Brooklyn’s tallest skyscraper will have a distinguished crown, for the first time since the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower held the title.

  10. This is so awesome! I hope Brooklyn adds even more super talls soon and that Queens gets in on it as well. And that Manhattan keeps getting more and more and eventually a mega tall or two!

    • I still wonder about the mystery of Junior’s. Why didn’t they bargain to get a new Junior’s in the new building and have the builders made plans for that space if they ever manage to acquire it.

    There Are More Tall Buildings In Queens Rising Up As We Speak. Actually They Could Even Be Taller Than 9 Dekalb. This Is Only The First Super Tall In Brooklyn And More Will Call Brooklyn Home Soon.
