The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel’s Wavy Curtain Wall Reaches Upper Floors, in Midtown West

The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel’s distinctive wavy curtain wall is reaching the upper floors of the topped-out structure at Four Manhattan West. Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and developed by Brookfield Properties, the 21-story building is part of Midtown’s Manhattan West complex, which sits directly adjacent to Hudson Yards. The structure’s fluted glass façade on the northern and southern elevations will easily distinguish it from the other glass-clad towers in the Manhattan West complex. The Pendry will yield a total of 164 guest rooms and a selection of condominiums on the upper floors.

Photos show the current state of façade work on the hotel.

The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel is only one small component of the seven-million-square-foot, eight-acre Manhattan West property, which extends from Ninth Avenue to Tenth Avenue and from 31st Street to 33rd Street.

There will be a mix of office space within three primarily commercial towers known as OneTwo, and Five Manhattan West, a Whole Foods Market opening next year, a market hall called Manhattan Eats, a flagship Peloton Studios, and a two-acre outdoor public plaza. Three Manhattan West is known as The Lofts, while Six Manhattan West is called The Eugene and has been open to residents.

Two Manhattan West is the last of the numbered properties to be built, and will eventually top out as a nearly two-million-square-foot, 62-story glass skyscraper with an identical architecture appearance as One Manhattan West, albeit with a slightly shorter flat roof parapet. It is expected to cost around $2 billion to construct.

Completion of the Pendry Manhattan West Hotel is expected in 2021.

  1. Don’t we have enough f’ing tourist swarming around New York already… The city is swamped with all these hotels. The infrastructure can’t handle it. The traffic’s overwhelming.. It doesn’t move. Get real ! Garbage everywhere piled up on the sidewalks. Subways barely functioning. Buses at a standstill.

  2. Without tourists many of our City’s cultural organizations would wither. Tourists don’t have cars. Many of these new hotels, especially in the HY area will be business travelers.

That said, I’m all for better infrastructure.!

The dark, deeply grooved, horizontal banding seems to really bring out the waves of the glass. Without it, I think the glass might look flat or somehow disorganized from some viewpoints. I’m surprised that this “wavy” building is turning out to be quite elegant.

  4. I like it!

  5. Hmmm, I wonder if the same thing was said about Rockefeller Center in 1930. Jules, your views are depressing and you have taken a rather foolish position. I feel you have missed much.
