Demolition permits have been filed for two buildings at 2 and 10 West 47th Street in Midtown, Manhattan. Located between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, the adjacent sites are a block from the 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center subway station, serviced by the B, D, F, and M trains. David Rothstein of Extell is listed as the owner behind the applications.

At 2 West 47th Street, there is presently a 12-story commercial and office building built in 1911, yielding 78,230 square feet. 10 West 47th Street currently houses a 14-story office building built in 1925, with a gross 71,738 square feet of commercial space.

Extell acquired 10 West 47th Street for $74.4 million in 2015, and 2 West 47th Street for $56 million the year prior. Although rumors have long been circulating of a Diamond District hotel by the developer, no plans have been announced for the combined 206,500 buildable square feet.

An estimated completion date has not been announced.

  1. What a shame. Classic New York buildings that fit their midblock locations perfectly. Aren’t there dumpy buildings or parking lots or garages for them to tear down and build on instead? Does Midtown need another hotel to add to the already bazillion ones there already?

  2. Aren’t buildings over 100 years old automatically protected against “development” (at least their facade)?? This is a wanton destruction of classic New York. Then again, they are demolishing the magnificent “Union Theological Seminary” surroundings on 120 street and Broadway–the medieval looking stone facades, cloisters–the history, as we speak. Shame on us for letting the NYC “protectors” do us and our heritage in like this.
