Aloft Hotel’s Superstructure Climbs Higher at 132 West 28th Street, in Chelsea

The reinforced concrete structure of the 203-room Aloft Hotel at 132 West 28th Street has risen to the tenth floor above Chelsea. YIMBY last reported on the project in late March, when foundations were just about to reach street level. Peter Poon Architects is the designer and while Frank Ng is the developer of the 326-foot-tall, 32-story tower. Now three months of construction work has made the reinforced concrete structure rise to the tenth floor.

A new set of photos from YIMBY user JC_Heights documents the recent progress on the superstructure, which is quickly ascending over the surrounding buildings.

Looking at the site from an angle. Work is about to surpass the height of the adjacent brick structures.

Looking at the main northern elevation from across the street.

Surrounded by low-rise buildings, the relative height of the hotel tower will give it a good deal of prominence in the neighborhood and provide guests with clear views of the city. It is definitely possible for the 32-story project to top off before the end of the year, as the identically stacked and repetitive floor plate design should facilitate the swift forming and pouring of the columns and slabs. Installation of the curtain wall on the northern and southern elevations is likely to begin in the coming months. The rendering in the featured image depicts what could be a mechanical floor, distinguished by what appears to be black-colored metal panelings around the halfway mark of the hotel.

Amenities for hotel guests will include a fitness center, a ground-floor bar and lounge, an outdoor terrace on the second floor, a business center on the third floor, and a club on the 30th floor.

A formal completion date for 132 West 28th Street has not been announced yet.

  1. I’m lovin the thoughtless gut gnawing setback. Now that’s how you build a city!

  2. “Surrounded by low-rise buildings, the relative height of the hotel tower will give it a good deal of prominence in the neighborhood ….”

Look at the right hand portion of the photo you took. They just topped off the 45-story hotel at 140 West 28th Street, which will be prominent in size, though certainly not in aesthetics.
