After four years of work, Hunter’s Point Library looks to be nearing full completion at 47-07 Center Boulevard in Long Island City. YIMBY last reported on the project back in December 2016, when a tour of the Steven Holl Architects-designed structure revealed spacious interiors, multi-story atriums, and stacked floor plates. Two and a half years later, the architecturally finished concrete walls and oversized abstract-shaped widows are complete, and the interiors also appear to be finished. Work on the surrounding landscape has yet to begin.

Recent photos shows the library from close up and from afar.

Hunters Point Library stands 109 feet high, measures 168 feet long, and is 40 feet deep. It sits on an asymmetrically shaped, trapezoidal plot of land and is almost perfectly aligned north and south. The main western elevation looks toward the American Copper Buildings, the East River ferry terminal, and the rest of the Midtown skyline. The closest subway is the 7 train at the Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue station, about a ten-minute walk away, while the Long Island City ferry terminal is only a five-minute walk to the north along the waterfront esplanade.

A series of financial, logistical, and manufacturing concerns have substantially delayed the project since it was publicly revealed in 2011. QNS.com was the last to report about the status of the library, revealing that it would finally open in the summer of 2019. No official opening has been announced yet.

  1. Being connected with library in Long Island City, the structure that you can see with no any difficulties. Toward the center of it and the inside I cannot see, design towards myself and your interests. Not secretly viewed when we were looked around all directions: Excitedly shaped. (Thanks to Michael Young)

As much as I like this building, one word keeps popping up in my mind….”Holstein”.

  3. This thing is like the Brandenburg airport in FRG. It will likely never open.

  4. How many stories will this Building ultimately have?

  5. Love Steven Holl, but this one is kind of a dud. Wish it was more “porous” to really connect the waterfront back to the neighborhood

  6. what a boondoggle.

  7. Do you have actual Queens Library contacts confirming an opening dates. Our emails to them came back with ‘no official time frame or estimate’

  8. I live with someone hired to work at this branch. Has not yet been given a start date to switch from current branch.
