460 Main Street, aka Riverwalk 8, Passes Halfway Mark on Roosevelt Island

Rendering of Riverwalk 8 at 460 Main Street in Roosevelt Island

Work has passed the halfway mark at 460 Main Street, aka Riverwalk 8, one of the newest additions to Roosevelt Island. The 21-story, 341-unit building is designed by Handel Architects and is being developed as a joint venture between The Related Companies and Hudson Companies. This will be the eighth component in the nine-building Riverwalk rental complex. Groundbreaking occurred earlier this year and topping out should happen sometime by the end of the year.

The design features a tight grid of square windows and glass corners that are wedged in between a mix of light- and dark-colored bricks. The massing is simple and rises straight up from the L-shaped floor plate to the roof parapet. The entire superstructure is being made with reinforced concrete.

Roosevelt Island has undergone a substantial transformation in recent years. The past decade brought a lot of construction and change to the narrow strip of land that sits between Manhattan and Queens. The property is a quick walk to and from the F train at the Roosevelt Island subway station, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is less than 20 minutes to the south by foot. Access to the tram to Manhattan is a five-minute walk while Cornell’s satellite campus is a ten-minute walk beyond the Queensboro Bridge.

Work on 460 Main Street is expected to complete next winter.

  1. Approval for your report about beautiful work in progress, it seems unfair if I read your details. But nothing on comments towards the advantage to the construction, or design especially dark-colored bricks. I expected to win in a rendering with itself, you send and I receive message by words. Bad feeling I don’t have when I am in happy, and be afraid of the structure can’t bring great pleasure. Impossible to think about it is going to be. (Thanks to Michael Young)
