The Durst Organization’s Queens Plaza Park Begins Vertical Ascent in Long Island City

Construction on Queens Plaza Park, aka 27-29 Queens Plaza North, is starting to rise above street level in Long Island City. The concave southern wall of the 67-story tower, which is also addressed as 29-37 41st Avenue, is taking shape. Reinforced concrete floors have begun to make their way toward the 755-foot-tall pinnacle. Foundations were completed in December, and work has now passed the second floor. The 978,000-square-foot project is being designed by Handel Architects, and The Durst Organization is the site’s developer. Selldorf Architects will be designing the interiors.

The construction site is located across the street from the ALTA LIC and next to the Dutch Kills Green public square. Sunnyside Yards is immediately to the east across Northern Boulevard, while Newcomers High School is located to the west across 29th Street. There will be a total of 958 residential units with 30% of them being affordable housing. Amenities will include an outdoor swimming pool, a 20,000-square-foot fitness center, a library, co-working space, a children’s playroom, and a demonstration kitchen.

Queens Plaza Park is one of many upcoming skyscrapers going up as part of Long Island City’s massive construction boom. Although the 755-foot height will be give it prominence among the downtown neighborhood, it will eventually be eclipsed by Skyline Tower, Hill West Architect‘s 67-story, 778-foot-tall residential project at 23-15 44th Drive.

No formal completion date for Queens Plaza Park has been announced yet.

Great comment of Dynamic of NYC new construction. Thank you. Some people don’t understand what you write, because they are too damb maybe. But with that comment, it is like from poetry book.
The many hate us, trying to stop us, trying to destroy us, like they did in Pearl Harbor, in 9/11, but we will always prevail and built our cities even greater than before, taller than before, more beautiful than before, and left those who hate us always far behind us!!! The Great Comment David, I’m really appreciated that!!!
AOC and JVB stopped Amazon great project, but they can’t stop us to rebuilt our Great City to the highest World class standards!!! We built more luxury buildungs than ever before, and we built more wealth for United States of America, and nothing can stop us for accomplish our goals, we will stop all Socialist attempts to destroy our Freedom and Liberties, we stop all invaders and caravans in Our Borders, and we defeat them and won’t have any mercy for those who continuously hate us and our Democracy and Freedom!!!

No, you may wrong, the last comment from David is a poetry!!! He simple describes a Dynamic of Life, Progress and Unstoppable Construction in the Big City, actually you must know if the City considered as living, if they built something new, during the last year, in this year, plan to built somthing for next year and so on. If this breaks Recession begins and City start dying without new construction. The life of City is unstoppable dynamic of new construction, it’s like a food for human, and without eating enough food human became left hungry and finally died. The modern Big City who stop building something new, became less attractive for investors, developers, without new investments, City became received less taxes, providing less jobs, and finally arsonist came and turned that City to Detroit like… That’s why new construction means investment either by government or by private money. Investment by City government appreciated, but only private investments can create true jobs without heavy burden for taxpayers.
Money spent by Durst Organization, or Related or Brookfield’s Partners, are money invested in City economy and City infrastructure without heavy burden for Taxpayers. Also private investment attract more investors see this potential and invest in Our City. The only government investment in City construction is not works, city bureacrats can only invest in BQE for 30 years straight, spending many billions, and result BQE is still under construction and left in very bad shape.
Look for Long Island Railroad Access to Grand Central, Second Avenue Subway, Fulton Transit Center and Oculus PATH station hub, all built with severe construction delays, budget overcost over 2 times or even more. Now look for Hudson Yards, TWC, Waterline Square, City Points, all this projects were hit hard during Recession but moved on with influx of fresh cash after Recession. This a clear example between City/State government sponsored and private real estate developments. What city can do the best is to fine drivers who forget time expired on meter parking and tolled NYorkers for everything, including even plastic and paper bags, the latter will be started in March 2020. We can built and rebuilt our cities without government spending taxpayer money, just by make NIMBYism obsolete!!!

Not sure what to say after a response like that. A lot of talking, but not really saying anything. Spoken like a true politician. Work on your grammar, or maybe proof read yourself after you word vomit.

Let’s hope that concave glass facade isn’t like the Walkie Talkie Tower otherwise the clocktower will get fried every sunny day.

They slightly raised up their height, it was originally 702′, now 755′, and before FAA prohibited built taller than 800′ elevation from the East River level. This applied for all buildings built to the north of 59th street in Manhattan. But is applied for all Queens at least.

Where is Walkie Talkie Tower, who built it, and don’t compare it with this Great Tower what Durst Organization finally start constructing in this part of Queens. This site was planned since 9/11. Even before this, jn middle of 1990s perhaps. I drove past this site many years ago, in 1992, since I got my driver license in NY. And worked in car limo service by then. I remember deserted structure of shuttered rundown Queenscenter Plaza, now it is beautiful Gotham Center office towers there, this part if Queens get it’s own modern Skyscraper District, taller building everywhere, and now with this Queens Plaza Park, who preserve also Queens architectural past by incorporated the 1914 built Landmarked Clock Tower into his 21st Century Landmark Building!!!

A tower who make Queens Downtown feels like real downtown of big city. At 755′ and 67 floors constructed this tower looks pretty tall, and inclipse glass tower wall make it like it’s belongs to some of World’s capitals. Real true City Tower what’s makes Queens streetscape looks Great and Ultra Modern, with his renowned Downtown. Located on command position from 59th Street Queensbridge. And is good that design incorporate old clock tower building.

  7. me like new york . big tower is good. wondrful subway take me around to watch big buildings construct. big tower curve is sexy. america loves us all and pure. freedom is sacred word.

    • Thank you Tim,
the greatest comment I ever see posted from you!!!
      Well, actually, the only one.
      Be that as it may,
some people don’t understand what you write,
because they are too damb maybe.
But with that comment, it is like from poetry book.
Too bad. So sad, If Trump and his Jack-ian jackboot followers could only read….

  8. The connection between the old building and the tower is just bad. It could have done better with more respect for the old tower before it. No problem with building a tower behind, but you can do it on a matter which make both towers better, rather then just dwarfing the one before.

    • Jack Liberman | April 3, 2019 at 12:44 am | Reply

That Durst Queens Plaza Park is not dwarfs over 14 story Historical Clock Tower, QPP is encast this landmark into their own unique Monolithic project. Making this Clock Tower as a foreground for tall skyscraper who is beautifully sculpted making unique 20th-21st Centuries Combined Landmark in Queens Plaza very busy intersection. 14/67 is not bad proportion, look for Edge Complex in Williamsburg, 5/30, or India Street in Greenpoint, 5/39, btw this building is being slashed his original 902′ height to just 755′, because of height regulation from FAA. La Guardia, is only 4 miles away. The height of original 14 story Clock Tower, is over 220 feet, so 220/755′ is not a so dwarfed. You may say that Hudson Yards Mall is being dwarfed much more or Sheds by supertalls!!!
It is good incorporation of older midrise structure in modern highrise construction, making very unique cooperation of old and new!!!
