Funding Secured for Brooklyn’s First Supertall, at 9 DeKalb Avenue

Developer JDS has secured $664 million in funding for the construction of 9 DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. The future residential skyscraper will soon rise 1,066 feet and become the tallest structure in Brooklyn, as well as the first tower in the outer boroughs to pass the 300-meter “supertall” threshold. The loan is coming from Otéra Capital Inc. and Silverstein Capital Partners. SHoP Architects is designing the building, which is located at the corner of DeKalb Avenue and Fleet Street, and sits across the street from the City Point complex. The development is expected to contain 425 rental apartments and 150 condominiums.

With foundation work already begun, construction of the building should pick up swiftly. 9 DeKalb Avenue will rise 73 stories tall and will be enclosed in a riveting dark bronze and glass envelope. A very slender profile, prominent vertical lines, and subtle alternating setbacks further emphasize the sheer height of the reinforced concrete structure. The building’s profile and massing are derived from the geometric outline of the property and draw inspiration from the decorative patterns of the landmarked Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn, around which the tower will be built.

The bottom portion of the skyscraper will rise from an elongated hexagonal footprint. The preserved bank interior will be repurposed as the new lobby space while the roof above will have a private outdoor residential lounge and a swimming pool. The building will contain 120,000 square feet allocated to ground floor retail space, accessible to pedestrian foot traffic along DeKalb Avenue and the outdoor plazas to the west.

Work on 9 DeKalb Avenue is now expected to be finished sometime in 2022. It is possible that the pilings and foundation walls can be finished by summer, which would allow the building to get above ground in the second half of 2019.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: There is collective on the site, and new beautiful tower will rise to the sky until we can see its structure. (Hello YIMBY)

    • Please pardon me for stinking up the place: The tower rise rise rise tower rise up in the air. (You’re welcome New York).

  2. please pardon me for being from outer space. terran construct pretty and bold. carbon life sexy in good way.

  3. WHY, why dark bronze?? This color is so depressing while the massing seems pleasing. This reminds me of the handle of my shovel.

Because silver is the color for just about every new building across the water?
I really like this design and Brooklyn keeps proving they try a little harder than their flashy cousin. Even though it’s just more housing for the wealthy, at least it will compliment the skyline rather than spite it.

    • I’ll withhold judgment until it’s actually built, but big-brown-cylinder evokes a certain je-ne-sais-quois
