Recent photos of 555 West 22nd Street show excavation in full swing for the future residential tower in Chelsea. The project is being designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects while SLCE Architects is the architect of record. Related is the developer, and new renderings show a substantial update to the design since images were first revealed in early 2018.

The project is composed of a 26-story main tower, with a small low rise portion to the east. The light facade, possibly limestone, matches most of RAMSA’s recent work in New York City, like 70 Vestry Street, down in Tribeca. A flat crown will cap the roofs of both sections of the project. Landscaping will accompany and line every setback, although its prominence has decreased in the new rendering.

The site runs along Eleventh Avenue between West 22nd and 23rd Street, across from the Hudson River Greenway and Pier 62 at Hudson River Park. Amenities will include a lounge room, event room, a game center, a business center, and a fitness center. There will also be a basement pool with lockers, a bicycle storage area, and a dog spa. Views of the Hudson River and uninterrupted sunset vistas will compliment every window along the symmetrical western elevation.

While the ground floor is comprised of the main lobby for residents, the second and fourth floor feature a private gallery space along with the first 13 residential units. The overall profile matches the average building height in the vicinity, the white facade will also match the light tones of 551 West 21st Street, directly across the street to the south.

Completion of the project is expected around 2020.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: I found finest design on progress, and I can’t find fault with the foundations from Michael Young. (Thank you so much)

  2. In post after post, including this one, you misuse the word “compliment.” It should be “complement” with an “e.” Small point, but worth getting it right.

  3. Yes, I would say the landscaping of the setbacks has decreased in this new rendering..to zero. Stern is mailing it in.

  4. Most similar RAMSA projects are prefab concrete made to look like limestone, sometimes with a limestone base. You don’t mention how many units. This project looks enormous for Chelsea. That would have been relevant info.

From an updated post-modern design, to an updated art moderne – either design would be a nice addition to the Hudson skyline.

  6. Looks like Morris Lapidus to me (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but less interesting.

  7. I’d like to compliment Bruce Serlen on a good catch.

  8. Zig Heil Robert Stern!!!
another one of the fascist monstrosities churned out of the conveyor belt…Speer, Schusev, Stern,,,what’s the difference

  9. It’s actually Sieg Heil, not Zig :-(((
