420 Kent Avenue’s 857 New Apartments Nearing Full Completion Along Williamsburg’s East River Waterfront

420 Kent Avenue‘s triplet of glass-covered residential towers rising next to each other along the East River waterfront in Williamsburg are nearing completion, with facade installation nearly finished. Designed by ODA New York and developed by Spitzer Enterprises, recent photos by YIMBY followers show the site’s substantial progress. The development is located to the south of the Williamsburg Bridge, along Kent Avenue between Broadway and South 9th Street.

The massing of each glass residential building is formed by a coherent series of shifting and staggered rectangular boxes varying in height and size. This asymmetrical design makes for a dynamic whole appearance when the triplets are viewed altogether. The voids in the interstitial spaces also create outdoor terraces for some of the residential units that face southeast towards the morning sun, or northwest towards the Manhattan skyline.

The project covers a total of 550,419 square feet. 12,454 square feet of that will be dedicated to ground-floor retail space. Above that will be the 857 rental apartments averaging 703 square feet apiece. Twenty percent, or 172 units, will let as affordable.

Access to the East River Ferry is only a short walk to the South Williamsburg ferry terminal, next to Schaefer Landing Park. The closest subway is Marcy Avenue on the J and M trains. 420 Kent Avenue is only one of several projects going up along the Williamsburg waterfront, with more under construction or set to begin work in the next few years.

Full completion of 420 Kent Avenue is likely in 2019.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Wow! Concourse on boxes together on progress, no concrete but showing only on glass. (Thanks to Michael Young)

  2. We shall see what the final product looks like on a sunny day – but these pics suggests the actual buildings lacks the “Wow!” factor the renderings promised 🙁
