A proposal has been revealed for the redevelopment of the St. Gregory the Great School, a four-floor Neo-Classical design by Helmle & Corbett from 1921. The notable historic features include the entrance portico and building piers at the upper story windows, with arch-headed blind lintels. The proposal is to almost double the building’s floor count and add residential units to the old school building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, at 991 Saint Johns Place.

The 185-foot tall structure will bring forty apartments to the neighborhood. Residents will have access to an amenities space, lobby, and terraces. A duplex unit will be created between the basement and first floor.

The site is three blocks away from the Kingston Avenue subway station, serviced by the 2 and 4 trains. The building is awaiting approval from the Landmark Preservation Commission and would include preservation of the connected church of St. Gregory.

Another proposal nearby includes 959 Sterling Place. While renderings have not been released, recent permits detail a 201-unit construction on the premises of the historic 19th Century Christian school, formerly the Methodic Episcopal Home for the Aged. Morris Adjmi Architects will be responsible for that design.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Back to seriously looked and I like it. How do I like it, soft and not too heavy on color.

  2. I knew that at some point yhis area would be redesigned..
I just wish that it had the funds to revive it so as to not be redesigned in the near future

  3. I thinks it’s 85ft not 185ft
