Last but not least in this week’s updates on the city’s Brownsville plan is the first look at Livonia 4, a mixed-use, multi-site development comprised of a series of adjacent parcels in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Construction is expected to begin this year and the project is the third new development announced as part of “The Brownsville Plan,” with design by Magnusson Architecture and Planning. The $1 billion initiative is expected to yield over 2,500 affordable homes, infrastructure upgrades, arts and cultural facilities, and new community service programs.

The parcels are located along Livonia Avenue between Powell Street and Mother Gaston Boulevard, with an additional parcel at the intersection of Livonia Avenue and Amboy Street.

Livonia 4 will include 420 affordable housing units for extremely low-income households, the formerly homeless, and low-income seniors. The development will also include a new supermarket, dining areas, and a rooftop greenhouse that will provide locally-sourced produce to building residents and the surrounding community.

Other sites that have not been specified are expected to feature additional community gardens, social services, a new senior center and a youth and family recreation facility.

“The Brownsville Plan was designed to understand and capture the unique vision and voice of Brownsville residents to inform a holistic plan to revitalize the neighborhood,” said HPD Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer. “As a result of extensive community engagement, Brownsville will not only see over 880 high quality affordable homes rise from the ground, but also the vital community and commercial space that will promote opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and healthy living created in direct response to the community’s wants and needs.”

The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) will oversee the project in collaboration with Radson Development, Community Solutions, and Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Thinking about something, something on these words to work that I should have called.

  2. Seems like a big improvement over The Master Destroyer’s “Tower in the Park” approach, but only time will tell.
