The new Edenwald YMCA in The Bronx will officially move forward following full approval from the City Council, New York City Planning Commission, and the Department of Buildings. Located at 1250 East 229th Street, the development is expected to create over 100 temporary jobs in its construction phase, and another 100 permanent jobs once completed.

Designed by Marvel Architects, the state-of-the-art facility will rise three stories and comprise 52,694 square feet of community facilities including two pools, a full-length basketball court, a gymnasium, and other low-cost programming. Available parking area is designed to accommodate 150 vehicles and accounts for an additional 51,000 square feet.

“All New Yorkers should have access to first-class recreation space, no matter where in the city they live,” said New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO James Patchett. “The unanimous approval of the Edenwald YMCA will bring much-needed athletic facilities, wellness and after-school programming to Bronx residents, making the neighborhood both healthier and stronger. The YMCA will benefit community members of all ages, and I look forward to its opening.”

Construction is slated to begin in the Fall of 2018, with full completion expected by 2020.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Dark and light colors contrast but beautiful appearance.

  2. Why are we building two story buildings?

Just build it as the base of a residential building.

  3. I’m glad for a new YMCA.
