Construction has wrapped on an affordable housing project at 1561 Walton Avenue, in The Bronx’s Concourse neighborhood. The 11-story building was a joint development by the Briarwood Organization and the Settlement Housing Fund (SHF), to create 59 affordable apartments for people with an income of 40% to 90% relative to the Area Median Income. The building was designed with the goal of fostering community within open spaces. Briarwood is also responsible for general contracting, while SHF is responsible for development.

The 98-foot tall structure yields 54,420 square feet of residential space. Apartments average 907 square feet apiece, indicating the inclusion of some sizable family units. Tenants will have access to bicycle parking, a laundry room, an accessory community room, a backyard, and a rooftop terrace on the tenth floor.

Edelman Sultan Knox Wood Architects is responsible for the masonry design. The façade is broken up, giving the illusion of being four separate structures with four tones for their bricks.

Please pardon me for using your space: I’m brave enough to comment that design very fine.

  2. I remember when this site was a parking lot. This is a far greater use. There is practically no parking in the area. They could have kept some of the Parking.

  3. ^Build the parking and it will entice people to get a car. Better off building no off street parking in a highly populated area with great mass transit like this one.
