Permits Filed for Religious Community Facility at 51 Park Place, Tribeca

With verticality possibly imminent at 45 Park Place, on the edge of the Financial District and Tribeca, Sharif El-Gamal of Soho Properties has now filed applications for a neighboring community facility, at 51 Park Place. Scott Newman of Cooper Robertson is listed as the architect, and the plans seem to be an updated version of the site’s former mosque, which was demolished back in 2011 to make way for the new residential tower.

Applications filed with the Department of Buildings show the total construction area will be 16,024 square feet, the entirety of which will be community facility space. The sub-level will contain a sanctuary, the cellar will contain administrative offices, and the first floor will hold the mechanical space. Despite the fact that the building’s usable space will be in the sub-level and cellar, the structure will still stand 71 feet tall, which would seemingly indicate a rather atypical configuration.

Renderings of the tower may show a glimpse at the community facility on the lower-left-hand corner of the image, but plans may have also changed, as the skyscraper component is being designed by SOMA’s Michael Abboud, as well as Ismael Leyva Architects. In any case, the whole site is currently an open pit of foundation work.

No completion date for the community facility has been specifically announced, and estimates for the tower have been continually moving backwards for the past few years, though they were most recently set for 2019.

Reaffirm to the title “religious community facility”.
